FALL 2016 SPORTS SEASON UPDATE
The Fall sports season is underway at PVCICS. The expanded athletic program is entering its second year and the teams and rosters have grown dramatically this year. There are four teams this Fall each playing a full schedule of contests. Here is a summary of the season to this point.
High School Junior Varsity Soccer. This is the first year for a high school team at PVCICS. The team has already played three games, compiling a 0-2-1 record. The first game against Putnam Technical High School in Springfield resulted in a 2-2 tie. PVCICS goals were scored by Gabe and Evan. The team’s second game against Hartbrook School at the Hadley Young Mens Club field resulted in a 4-0 loss. The team bounced back in their third game, battling Gateway the entire game before falling 2-1. The PVCICS goal was scored by Gabe.
Middle School Girls Soccer. The girls team played their first game of the year on Tuesday against the Academy at Charlemont at the Oxbow marina fields in Northampton. The result was an exciting 1-0 victory. The games’ only goal was scored by Sloane. Coach Mike Spanknebel also singled out Emily L. as the game MVP for her strong work on defense. The girls next game will be Friday September 23rd at the Hadley Elementary school field. Parents should park in the lot next to the Hadley Safety Complex on East Street. Coach Spanknebel will have a week’s worth of practice time to get the girls ready for their game against Mahar Regional.
Middle School Boys Soccer. The boys team has played two games so far. The first game against the Academy at Charlemont was a 5-2 victory. Goals were scored by Sebastian and Odin who each scored twice and Jonny . Coach Nick Scaltreto couldn’t single out any player for outstanding play, indicating that the win was a team effort. The boys team next game is scheduled for September 26th at home against Frontier. Hopefully there will be another game scheduled for the team before that. Watch the calendar on the school website for any additional games.
Cross Country. There is a new Cross Country team at PVCICS this year. The team has been practicing to get in shape for some meets later this Fall. The turnout for the team has been fantastic as Coach Laura Luker currently has 20 students from grades 6-10 training on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. All but one of these runners are girls, so we are looking for some boys to join the team. During the first year the team will be focusing on training and building a team identity; however there will be some meets scheduled during October for those runners ready to compete against runners from other schools. Cross Country meets are usually invitationals that feature multiple schools. Our team is currently scheduled to participate in 3 River Valley League meets as well as the Bement Invitational and two state-level meets.
Parents are reminded that the practice and game schedules for all of the PVCICS teams can be found on the school website at pvcics.org. Click on the Athletics tab on the left side of the web page and scroll down to the calendar for each sport. When you click on a specific game/date, you will receive additional information such as directions to game sites. Please check the calendars regularly as any changes will be made on the calendars. You may also add the sports schedules to your personal Google calendar by clicking on the + sign in the lower right corner of the calendar.
PVCICS Soccer Finds a Home
PVCICS has recently completed arrangements to rent field space at the Oxbow Marina located at the end of Island Road in Northampton. Three teams--HS Boys, MS Boys, and MS Girls--will hold practice sessions after school during the months of September and October. The tentative schedule has the two boys teams practicing on Mondays and Wednesdays and the girls team on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Teams will be transported to practices and home games via the Southern bus. Parents will be responsible for pick up at 6:00pm. We will be using the two fields to the right at the end of Island Road as you enter the Marina area. Parking is confined to the area to the grassy area under the power lines on the left at the end of Island Road
There are a number of rules governing use of the Oxbow fields that we must follow as a condition of our contract to use the fields. Parents attending practices/games or picking up players at the conclusion of these sessions must adhere to these conditions or the school could lose playing privileges at the site. The rules are as follows
Generally speaking we need to be good citizens and neighbors to the residents of Island Road and members of the Marina. It is a congested area at times and use of the soccer areas is due to the kindness of the occupants of the area. There have been issues in the past with cars speeding in and out of the area and parking in spaces allocated to boaters. Because of the space and traffic concerns, parents are urged to carpool for pick-ups from games and practices.
The use of these fields as a “home” for our soccer teams should help the program as we try to establish it as a consistent part of the overall program of activities at PVCICS. We hope to use the fields as a home for the Ultimate program in the Spring as well.

The PVCICS soccer program consists of Middle School teams for boys and girls in grades 6-8 and a High School team for boys in grades 9-12. The High School girls will continue playing on the cooperative team with Hampden Charter School in Chicopee because there are not sufficient numbers to support a HS girls team at PVCICS. The MS girls team will practice on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at the Oxbow Marina fields in Northampton. The HS boys and MS boys teams will practice Monday and Wednesday afternoon at the Oxbow fields . The HS girls team will practice every day at Hampden Charter School in Chicopee.

The PVCICS Cross Country program grew out of last year's very successful Girls On the Run program. PVCICS has developed a combined MS/HS Cross Country team for students in grades 6-12. All MS and HS runners will be eligible to run in a series of Wednesday meets sponsored by the River Valley Athletic League held during the months of September and October. Participation in these meets will be voluntary and will be intended for those students wishing to experience a more competitive athletic experience. The teams will also compete in other invitational meets throughout the season. The schedule of meets is as follows:
